The MCU - Shang chi
Shang chi plot
- Shang Chi and the legend of the 10 rings is the 25th film in the MCU
- It made $432million worldwide, it became the 9th highest grossing film of 2021.
- the budget was reported to be around $150million
- The original artwork for Shang chi in the 1970s was inspired by the great Shang Chi
- Shang chi serves as an origin story for the first Asian superhero to lead his own marvel movie, scrolls back and complicates the way Iron Man 2 dealt with the comics' Asian villain, the mandarin
- The mandarins first appearance in 1964, it was a racist Chinese caricature
The mandarin
- Super - villain
- Enemy of Iron Man and other avengers
- The ten rings that gave him his power were taken from a crashed alien spaceship
- The negative stereotypical presentation of the character would have gone down very badly in China and other Asian countries
- Disney has become a global conglomerate and needs to be careful with its lucrative markets in China and elsewhere
The new villain
- the character of Xu Wenwu is an evolution/composite of a previously problematic character - the politically acceptable 'mandarin' of you will
- In the comics and early MCU films the character was called Fu Manchu or the mandarin, this is very stereotypical
- Disney/marvel tackles this by changing the characters name, giving him a motivation and personality and casting Tony Leung, on of the most respected actors in Asia
The 'Ten rings' that form a central part of the Shang Chi film have been embedded subtly into the MCU over the last two decades
