Exam question for film
Explain how ownership can significantly influence a films production. Refer to Disneys Snow White (1937) and Shang Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings (2021) to support your idea.
- Ownership and production - involves budget, casting, filming, scripts, time, editing -
- Snow White took 3 years to make
- WETA VFX for Shang Chi
- Shang Chi was delayed due to Covid
- Diverse cast for Shang Chi
Both films are owned by Disney, but Disney were two very different companies when making these films.
INTRODUCTION
Most companies don't have the vast wealth of a 2020 Disney, Disney in 1937 was a very different company but still benefited from advantages that others such as Paramount and Dreamworks could only have dreamed of.
Idea 1 -
Ownership direction 1937 - Disney was a new direction for animation in 1937 - so how bold and innovative they are comes from the ownership
Ownership - 2020 - Marvel bought by Disney - got to keep their fans happy too- also has lots of Easter eggs and intertextuality to other MCU films
Idea 2 -
Budget in 1937 - Snow White cost $1.5 million
Budget in 2021 - Shang Chi cost $150 million
Snow White opening weekend box office - $6 million
Shang Chi opening weekend box office - $71.4 million
Idea 3 -
Vertical and horizontal integration means Disney have all the links - not every company has this
