Disney

Formation of Disney

1. Walt Disney arrived in California

  • he arrived in California aged 23
  • he made a cartoon in Kansas City about a little girl in a cartoon world, Alice's wonderland
  • he got a deal to make 3 films which was picked up by a distributor in 1923
  • This was he start of the Disney company
  • The company was originally called Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio
  • The company soon changed its name to The Walt Disney studio
2. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
  • Produced 26 cartoons with him in within 1 year
  • He did not own any of this but his distributor did
  • The distributor took everything from behind his back including animators
  • Walt vowed from this moment on he would personally own everything he did
3. Steamboat Willie
  • Created after Oswald was lost
  • First 2 movies were unsalable as they were silent films released in a time when films with sound were booming  but Steamboat Willie was the third and first to be successfully sold due to it's synchronized sound and motion
  • Mickey Mouse was a huge hit with amazing reviews

4. Silly Symphony
  • Walt Disney soon produced another series
  • it featured different cast of characters in each film and enabled animators to experiment with stories with less of the quick humor but more of mood, emotion, and musical themes
  • the Silly symphonies turned into a training ground for animated feature films
  • 'flowers and trees'the first full color cartoon won an academy award for best cartoon in 1932, the first to win in this category#
  • For the rest of that decade, a Disney cartoon won the Oscar every year
5. Snow White
  • On one night in 1934, Walt Disney told his animators that they were going to make a feature film , he then told them the story of snow white and the 7 dwarfs
  • There were skeptics in the group
  • It took 3 years to make the film and debuted on December 21st 1937 and became a spectacular hit
  • Snow white soon became the highest grossing film of all time until it was surpassed with Gone with the wind
  • Walt now wanted to do more feature films
6. Theme-parks
  • Walt was never satisfied with what he had accomplished
  • As his motion pictures became successful, he felt a desire to branch out
  • One area that amused him was amusement parks
  • He felt the park should be somewhere where everyone should be involved, not just the kids
  • This was the genesis of Disneyland
  • The park opened on July 17, 1955
  • Walt said Disneyland would never be completed as long as there was still imagination in the world
  • new attractions are added today and is even more popular now then it was back then
7. The Disney company
  • Walt Disney died in 1966
  • Roy Disney saw the building and financing of the Walt Disney Studios and died in 1971
  • by the 1950s Disney had a variety of businesses
  • cooperators tried to buy them and the pieces of the company
  • Now there is Disney elements everywhere and it is owned by a company not a family member
Notes
  • Disney is the second largest media company in terms of revenue
  • Branches out into Disney + and Disneyland
  • Independent divisions
  • Helps Disney meet its corporate vision and keep its position as Disney leader
  • An advantage is that they can release products at the same time
Snow white
  • The animation style is totally different, not choppy but smoother
  • the dwarfs are more exaggerated compared to snow white
  • first time and actress was used in a cartoon - this is the reason the animation looks smoother (rotor-scoping)
