 What is playstation?
  • Playstation is a japanese-american gaming company, owned by sony interactive entertainment .
  • In 1988 Sony partnered with Nintendo on a CD-ROM add on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System 
  • The planned device, tentatively called the Play Station or SNES-CD was scheduled for presentation in 1991
  • Nintenods president discovered the original agreement would give sony control over the CD-ROM games, a concern that lead the deal to fall through
  • Sony decided to continue with the project and develop its own independent console
  • The first playstation was released n in Japan in decemebr 1994
  • The consoles success in Japan paved the way for worldwide release in september 1995

Brand Focus 

Playstation continues to focus on its own franchises releasing new games for example the Ghost of yotei (2/10/2025)
They continue to work on consoles, with a PS6 in the works, expected release tobe a few years away (2027/28)

Playstation started as an in home console, however in 2016, they released a Playstation VR1, in Playstation VR2 in 2023 and in 2023 they also released the Playstation portal, a handheld device similar to the Switch (Nintendo)

As of June 2025 Playstation had 125million monthly users, the PS5 accounted for the majority of players

Target Audience 

Playstation targets core and casual gamers including a significant demographic of younger adults (18-35)
The brand emphasises inlusivity by attracting tech savy individuals, competitive online players and a growing number of female players, people who live in more urban areas with a higher disposable income as Playstations are expensive especially when they are brand new for example the PS5 was $499.99 at launch.
